Eating your placenta after birth is all the rage!

Today, many women look to placenta encapsulation as a natural way to even out their hormones after birth and avoid postpartum depression.  It is a hot topic right now since  Sunday’s season premiere of “Keeping Up with the Kardashians,” the reality star revealed she might be interested in ingesting her own placenta after her baby girl is born, in order to maintain her good looks. The eating of placenta has been used for hundreds of years in Traditional Chinese Medicine to increase milk supply and boost your energy and mood after child birth. It is also commonly used to:
-decrease lochia (postpartum bleeding)
-decrease iron deficiency which leads to more energy
-decrease post partum night sweats
-decrease postpartum depression severity

Each women’s placenta make-up is completely different and unique to every mother. There is no medicine or vitamin supplement that will do what 1 placenta pill can do for a mom. It is said that you are replacing the hormones that your body loses during child birth.  Baby blues can effect up to 80% of women within the first week of birth. Women who consume their placenta report fewer emotional issues than those who don’t.

One of our very own ONEBODE team members has personal experience with consuming her placenta. She, however, chose to eat it raw immediately after she gave birth at home. (If you give birth at a hospital eating it immediately is a little harder to do depending on each states rules) If you are a total bad ass you can go ahead and just chew on a few bites and eat it after it has been rinsed or you can opt to put a few pieces in a smoothie.   1. Did she consume the entire raw placenta right away, just a little piece and that is it or eat it in entirety over a period of time?
